Airbnb Removes Over 400,000 Low-Quality Listings to Polish its Image

The latest Global Quality Report rewards top hosts—but tighter policies and mass removals raise big questions. Here’s what you need to know.

Key Details:

Airbnb has released its first ever Global Quality Report, detailing initiatives aimed at enhancing the platform's quality and reliability.

Airbnb has removed over 400,000 low-quality listings from the platform to maintain high standards. These efforts have contributed to an average listing rating exceeding 4.75, with more than 80% of recent reviews being five stars and less than 1% being one star.

Additionally, Airbnb has focused on reducing host cancellations, a significant concern for guests. Measures such as adjusting booking settings, enhancing pricing tools, and implementing stricter cancellation policies have led to a nearly 30% year-over-year decrease in host cancellations.

Since 2007, Airbnb's community has expanded to over 5 million hosts, facilitating more than 2 billion guest arrivals worldwide.

In the past three years, Airbnb has introduced over 535 new features and upgrades to ensure consistent, high-quality experiences. These include the "Guest Favorites" collection, highlighting top-rated homes based on ratings, reviews, and reliability data, and "top listing highlights," which showcase listings in the top 1%, 5%, and 10% of eligible homes.

Notably, more than 250 million nights have been booked at Guest Favorite listings, maintaining an average rating of 4.92.

Our Take:

Airbnb’s push for quality is a double-edged sword for hosts.

On one hand, it rewards excellence—Guest Favorites and high-ranking listings gain more visibility, leading to better occupancy and pricing power. On the other, the removal of low-quality listings and stricter cancellation policies indicate a more competitive environment, emphasizing the need for consistent excellence.

Airbnb is sending a clear message: quality isn’t optional.

For hosts who want to stay ahead, the strategy is simple—optimize for guest experience relentlessly. Faster response times, spotless properties, and exceeding expectations are no longer just good practice; they’re survival tactics.

The real concern? Airbnb holds all the cards. With stricter cancellation penalties and unilateral listing removals, hosts must question how much control they actually have over their business. Airbnb’s definition of “quality” dictates who thrives and who disappears. Hosts must adapt, but they should also consider diversifying—building direct booking channels and leveraging alternative platforms.
